BLENDING OUTDOORS AND IN FOR USABLE SPACES YEAR-ROUND
The Yess family had an existing fenced courtyard with a well-loved pool, hot tub and a fun outdoor bar area.
However, homeowner,Kari Yess, quickly found that a lack of a natural flow between the two spaces and the interior of the home were a barrier to use and the bar seating area was actually too small for hosting friends and family.
She reached out to Cori Dyer, Senior Designer with Cure Design Group, for her guidance. She contacted past partners, Poynter Landscape, to partner on the project. “I really appreciate Poynter’s professionalism,” said Cori. “When you bring them in on a project, you never have to worry. They walk through once, draw up the project and don’t require additional walkthroughs. It’s wonderful to work with a company that doesn’t require handholding. They were also great at coming up with ideas to fill out the project.
In approaching design, we first extended the functionality of the indoor kitchen by removing two large pillars in the outdoor bar that enlarged the space and oriented it more towards the pool and constructing a pergola for shade and allowed for the installation of a large fan.
We then added an outdoor grill, refrigerator, seating for eight and a bar top with a large accordion pass-through window to the main kitchen which allows conversation with those inside and a direct line of sight to the TV.
The next solution was the construction of a covered pavilion next to the pool with a fireplace, powerful fans, comfy lounge seating and flat-screen TV ideal for cooling off in the shade after a hot day in the pool or cozying up on cool evenings.
Kari had originally expressed a desire to locate the fireplace close to the house, but the pool equipment was blocking that area and an easement prevented new construction. Now, the fireplace is visible from inside and provides an inviting nighttime scene through the windows. A new fence, retaining wall and plantings provide a screen for the pool equipment.
The family now uses their outdoor spaces twelve months of the year, day and night. The fans in both spaces keep it cool all summer long and insect-free. The hot tub and fireplace extend usage through the cool months. The outdoor kitchen is used for cooking and entertaining often with just the family or for a crowd.
Kari admitted, “We loved every bit of the design process, more than we thought we would. There was quite a bit of coordination with the construction company on timing, but Poynter made it painless. They also did a great a job of working with Town and Country to acquire the different permits and zoning adjustments. They kept us in the loop.
This redesigned outdoor living space will clearly be loved and appreciated for years to come by several generations.

Cori Dyer
After graduating from the University of Missouri, K.C., I spent my days raising our three boys. However, my interest in fashion and interior design kept me reading and taking classes in the design field. After working in a high-end retail fashion store in St. Louis, I realized that putting together assorted fabrics, textures and styles was a passion. After decorating my own home, and those of family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, I realized that my passion and "eye" for fashion work equally well in interior design. I have built some of my strongest relationships through the opportunity of creating spaces for my clients over the years. I will learn your lifestyle and taste, and working with you, I will create a design that exceeds your expectations.
